Western Records Destruction at 40: A Legacy of Security and Service

In an era where it’s more important than ever to safeguard our personal information, the work of Western Records Destruction has never been more essential. This year, the Boise, Idaho–based company is turning 40 and going strong. The locally owned shredding company has made it their business (and their passion) to help commercial and residential customers securely dispose of confidential documents, hard drives and media.
Over four decades, Western Records Destruction has earned the trust of nearly 4,000 customers by consistently handling sensitive materials with care and professionalism. Every month, the company shreds more than one million pounds of paper, recycling all of it rather than sending it to a landfill. Over the years, they’ve expanded their footprint through strategic acquisitions and now have shred trucks in Boise, Idaho Falls, Salt Lake City and Spokane.
Like many success stories, theirs started with an unexpected opportunity. In 1986, the company grew out of a sister recycling business. One day, a major corporate recycling customer made an unusual request: help them shred an entire warehouse of material.
“At the time, nobody in the region was doing that kind of work,” explains General Manager Tyler Dean. “So the management team from the recycling company decided to engineer an industrial shredder from scratch to take care of this customer’s need.”
From there, the company grew steadily. Another growth spurt came in the late 1990s to early 2000s, when mobile shredding trucks helped change the delivery model of this industry at the same time identity theft became a more prevalent concern for businesses and individuals.
“Western Records Destruction has continued to evolve to meet the industry and we’re proud to be able to assist them in their growth,” says Scott Bowen, Vice President and Branch Manager for Banner’s Overland branch in Boise.
Today, Western Records Destruction provides on-site and off-site shredding services to meet the demands of their growing customer base of 95 percent commercial businesses. A hospital, for example, might need up to 700 locked containers placed throughout its facility. With a recurring schedule, the Western Records team takes the rolling containers out to the shred truck, tipping each directly into the shredder.
Dean attributes the company’s success to its people-first mindset. “Our focus has always been taking really good care of our customers,” he says, adding that the company places an emphasis on even the smallest touchpoints. Their team is readily available to handle questions about billing, service and anything else that comes up. Their customer-focused approach has evolved to be their best marketing tool, with happy customers sending more referrals their way.
While customer care is part of their success, trust is the other part of the equation. For many customers, that starts with one thing: NAID AAA Certification. Western Records Destruction holds this rigorous third-party certification, which requires staff training and audits to ensure full compliance with the latest privacy laws and regulations. It provides customers with peace of mind that their sensitive documents are handled properly, protecting their businesses from legal exposure and data breaches.
The commitment to showing up and doing the job right is woven into everything the company does. Forty years later, they have grown into a multistate operation. What hasn’t changed is the mission: to know what customers need, deliver without fail and build the kind of trust that makes business relationships endure.
