ElliptiGO: Reinventing Fitness for the Long Run

On any given day in Southern California, you'll find people surfing before work, cycling along the coast or squeezing in a run under blue skies. It's a place where active lifestyles aren't just encouraged—they're woven into the culture.

It's this backdrop that gave rise to the ElliptiGO, the world’s first outdoor elliptical bike. The ElliptiGO blends the motion of running with the efficiency of cycling and is designed to reduce impact on the body while providing a strong cardiovascular workout. Since it officially debuted in 2010, the bike has earned a loyal following among runners, athletes and fitness enthusiasts.

For runners sidelined by the pounding of pavement, endurance athletes seeking a cross-training alternative and fitness enthusiasts looking to take their workouts outdoors, the ElliptiGO offers a way to stay active without giving up the feeling of running.

"What makes the ElliptiGO unique is that it offers the benefits of running but without the impact," says co-founder Bryan Pate. "It lets people go through the world as a runner—but faster and without the same risk of injury."

The idea first emerged in 2005 when Pate and fellow co-founder Brent Teal began exploring whether the natural motion of an elliptical trainer could work outdoors. They spent years refining prototypes before reaching a breakthrough with their fourth version of the ElliptiGO, the Echo. Confidence in their concept grew after Pate and Teal completed a grueling cycling event known as the Death Ride.

"That was the marquee event that convinced us it would be a success," says Pate.

Since its launch, ElliptiGO has grown from a startup operating out of what Pate refers to as the company's original "shedquarters" into PT Motion Works, a Solana Beach, Calif.-based health and wellness company dedicated to building a portfolio of products designed to improve balance, fitness and longevity.

In 2025, PT Motion Works acquired balance board pioneer Indo Board. Early in 2026, it acquired ID Sports GmbH, the creator and owner of the GIBBON brand of slacklines, bringing products such as the SlackBoard, a popular balance training device, into its growing ecosystem of fitness tools.

As the business has grown, ElliptiGO's longstanding relationship with Banner has evolved. The relationship began in 2009—shortly after the business began—and has remained strong through the years.

"The Banner team's responsiveness, flexibility and willingness to solve problems is what stands out," says Pate. "When we need something, they always answer the phone and handle it in real time—that’s important to us."

"Bryan and his team exemplify the entrepreneurial spirit that makes Southern California such an incredible place for innovation," says Vice President and Senior Commercial Relationship Manager Sergey Volkov. “I am grateful for the opportunity to work with them and see them grow into a leader in healthy aging and fitness.”
