DiscNW: Building Character Through Play

When the sun makes an appearance in the Pacific Northwest, parks and fields across the Puget Sound region celebrate with flying discs, laughter and teamwork. At the center of it all is DiscNW, a nonprofit that turns the game of ultimate frisbee into something bigger than sport.
DiscNW started in 1995 to support Seattle’s growing “ultimate” community. Today, it’s expanded by geography, players and ways to play – and it’s become one of the biggest ultimate programs in the country. They offer youth and adult leagues, summer camps, school programs and tournaments throughout the region. League play ranges from highly competitive to completely casual.
What makes DiscNW special isn’t the size of the program. It’s the values they bring to the game. Ultimate frisbee is a sport where players make their own calls, without referees. It’s built on trust, communication and mutual respect.
A client since 2018, DiscNW is a growing nonprofit with a mission that mirrors Banner’s own values-led commitment to building community. “DiscNW brings together people of all backgrounds and skill levels,” said Timothy Kalso, VP and Woodinville Branch Manager. “They are a catalyst for building connections that may not happen otherwise — and they do it in a sporting environment. We’re proud to be their bank and help them continue to thrive.”
At DiscNW, the spirit of the game is rooted in good sportsmanship, being fair and having fun. It’s baked into everything they do. Their camps and clinics teach skills like throwing and teamwork but also focus on building character. Players arrive seeking stronger frisbee skills – and often depart having found a place in this fun, supportive community.
DiscNW also works to make ultimate frisbee more accessible for all. They have a sliding scale for every program, lend out gear and actively support players from all backgrounds. Whether someone is trying ultimate for the first time or preparing for a big game, they’ll find a spot on the field among peers.
We’re honored to partner with DiscNW while cheering their mission from the sidelines. They’re an example of how, in business, success takes many different forms – in this case, helping Puget Sound residents come together around a love of sport.
