For Alexa Flynn, Assistant Vice President and Commercial Loan Support Supervisor, leadership means rolling up her sleeves to support the team. As a supervisor who stays hands‑on processing loans, she prides herself on being in the mix to move things forward for Banner’s commercial clients.

Alexa started her career with the Bank in 2013 as a teller at the downtown San Diego branch. By 2016, she had become a personal banker at the Point Loma branch, and by 2019 had transitioned to the commercial lending team as a Commercial Loan Specialist. In 2025, she moved into a supervisor role and now manages four direct reports while still handling production, portfolio management and helping to document updated procedures for loan specialists.

While her career journey isn’t necessarily typical in banking, it underscores a culture at Banner that recognizes and develops talent from within. What keeps Alexa fulfilled after 13 years? Her role as a player-coach. Because she began her career in a client‑facing role, she understands the daily pace and pressures her team manages—and leads with that shared experience in mind. “I take as heavy a load as others on the team and strive to lead by example for how we can work together to help every client,” she says.

She also loves that no two days are alike and that she’s always learning something new. “I actually enjoy wearing multiple hats,” she says. “It’s also gratifying to see our clients’ journeys over time.”

Alexa’s team, which specializes in servicing commercial loans, plays a significant part in providing clients with the resources they need to run their businesses and to grow at their own pace. She has seen clients go from needing a $2 million loan to $30 million as their businesses grew and expanded. “If we’re doing our jobs right, the client and the bank both succeed.”

That commitment to shared success is rooted in the culture she sees every day at Banner. “We’re not transactional with our clients,” she says. “We get to know them and invest time and care into each relationship. And it takes a lot of hands to complete a loan—from branches to credit analysts—so many people lean in to make it happen.”

Outside of work, Alexa is deeply committed to her family and her community. Sundays often mean pancake breakfasts at her aunt’s home with her husband and three kids. She’s also active in Point Loma’s annual Festa do Espírito Santo, a more than 115‑year‑old Portuguese cultural celebration. She says Banner’s commitment to work-life balance makes it possible for her to prioritize what matters most.
